After a lucky 13 years at Microsoft where he handled everything from Windows (as a program manager on the initial and subsequent releases of the OS) to headed up the Redmond software giant's multimedia offshoot, Gabe Newell took the seven figures he'd earned and along with fellow Microsoft employee Mike Harrington formed Valve Corporation in 1996. They entirely self-funded their first project, Half-Life, which wound up turning PC first-person shooters on their head when it was released two years later.
