Grave of the Fireflies is not a movie that's easy to watch. Based on the novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, Hotaru no Haka tells the story of a Japanese boy and his little sister, struggling to survive in the countryside near Kobe during the last days of World War II. Set in scene beautifully by animation director and long-time Miyazaki collaborator Yoshifumi Kondo (Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service), Grave of the Fireflies effectively bucks traditional anime conventions by trying to tell a realistic story in a realistic fashion. Imagine a live-action movie done as an animated feature -- devoid of stylized expressions or story-telling elements usually at home in the genre.
