Energy generation is the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally, and efforts to reduce GHG emissions often focus on the energy sector. Renewable resources, such as solar, wind and hydropower, offer potential GHG emissions savings compared to fossil fuels such as coal or petroleum. A comparison of the life cycle GHG emissions from diverse electricity- generation technologies, both renewable and nonrenewable, is shown in the figure below.
