I once showed this Studio Ghibli cartoon to a bunch of friends on New Year’s Eve. Half way through, they said it was the most depressing film they’d ever seen and that unless it got more cheerful they’d decamp and watch something else (which they did; old episodes of Miranda, a selection which poured vinegar on my wounds). What I took from that debacle: there’s a time and a place for even the most perfect works of art.
